Voice In Progress Studio has emerged as a separate research space focused on the aspect of voice as a result of the performative and educational activities of Studio Kokyu and the creative scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage carried out by Joanna Kurzyńska in 2018. The voice and the tissues associated with it have become the subject of questions not only in the context of the actor/performer’s art, but of man in general, of human existence.
A voice that develops. Voice in progress. A voice that frees a man through its own freedom.
The main path of the Voice In Progress Studio is the “Freeing the Natural Voice” method by Kristin Linklater, which outlines specific steps (through a progression of exercises) towards re-education of the communication system between thought impulses and the body (voice), leading to actual freedom for the voice user. Freedom of voice expression in speech, singing and all sounds that a person may be capable of. Free access to emotions and feelings that belong to vocal expression. Based on specific techniques, but also discovering a new key to them each time during regular work sessions, the Studio’s research opens up a probably endless path towards truth and freedom in the voice.
“I Want to Hear You, Not Your Voice” by Iris Warren
The Studio program includes shorter and longer workshop sessions, master workshops with invited teachers, group and individual lessons. Although the main path of the Studio is a research path, focused on practices that develop voice capabilities and their transfer, the research stages are summarized/tested in performative activities (until 2023 in Kokyu Studio events).
Joanna Kurzyńska comes from Wrocław, Poland. A violinist by profession (K. Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław), but she will play anything needed. In practice, she is an actress, vocalist, composer and teacher of acting and voice work.
She trained in acting and singing under the supervision of Polish and foreign teachers and practitioners, but she considers her most important teachers to be Emma Bonnici, Kristin Linklater and Małgorzata Jaworska-Kaczmarek, her mother. She made her debut in 2000 in the musical “Peter Pan” at the Roma Musical Theater in Warsaw. Co-founder of the Youth Academy of Musical in Wrocław, where since 2009 she has been conducting acting classes and directing performances with the participation of students. She was awarded with the Creative Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, which gave rise to her original research path, Voice In Progress. In 2020-2021, she collaborated with the SUTARI band.
Associated with the Grotowski Institute mainly through Studio Kokyu in years 2017-2023 (co-running the Studio’s research and workshop line with Przemysław Błaszczak, the performance “Halo?” in 2018, „Action MEdea” 2022-2023), as well as the author’s Studio Voice In Progress, in which she conducts research on the source, possibilities and meaning of the human voice, with particular attention to the „Freeing the Natural Voice” method by Kristin Linklater.
