SIGH - SING Intense
Rome, Italy
Five-day intensive voice workshop led by Joanna Kurzyńska (Designated Linklater Teacher)
June 2-6, 2025
Rome, Italy
Work elements:
- physical training stimulating body-mind-voice communication and a spirit of ensamble
- elements of Kristin Linklater “Freeing the Natural Voice” method - combining Linklater’s main idea with a sung voice – “How can a sigh turn into a song?”
- resonators – work with basic resonators and their importance in using the voice (both spoken voice and singing voice)
- “harmony of common singing” – a common meeting in the richness of traditional polyphonic songs;
- group games designed to awake presence, focus and performative creativity
- individual coaching in front of the group – each participant will have a short lesson in frame of the workshop to experience his/her own voice potential and a direction of work for the future
The work will be a physical exercise, and the participants will interact with each other, both vocally and physically.
“SIGH-SING” is a rich and profound meeting with the human voice, during which we learn how to connect methodological experiences with the practical release of the voice in song, text, and improvisation. The five-day session of this work promises to delve into the elements of the "actor's quartet" and allow them to harmonize with each other under new conditions created in the atmosphere of a laboratory of creative exploration.
Joanna Kurzyńska (Designated Linklater Teacher) will guide participants and their voices towards better understanding, awareness, and resonance. Drawing from the work of her mentors, including Kristin Linklater, the facilitator aims to grant the voice the freedom and liberty it deserves, allowing for sincere expression.
The work will include individual lines for each participant, as well as a group experience. Each person will have the chance to open their own path of working with the voice, while as a group, we will be able to experience the strength of support that comes from sharing our voices and meeting within it through polyphonic song, conversation, breath, movement, and silence.
“And then, all of a sudden, that song begins to sing us.
That ancient song sings me;
I don’t know anymore if I am finding that song or if I am that song”
“From the Theatre Company to Art as Vehicle” Jerzy Grotowski
"SIGH-SING" is based on the method "Freeing the Natural Voice" by Kristin Linklater and practices derived from the work of theater ensembles operating in the ethos of performer training, inspired by the work of Jerzy Grotowski (understanding the term "performer" as "a doer/person who is doing", echoing Grotowski). The five-day intensity of work can lead to real changes in the body-mind of participants through the tools proposed during the sessions and significantly outline the direction of their further professional journey.
