SIGH-SING -
Leipzig, Germany
Two days voice workshop led by Joanna Kurzyńska (Designated Linklater Teacher)
26-27 April 2025 - Leipzig (Germany)
"SIGH-SING” has an open character and everybody is invited to take part in it, regardless of experience or level of advance.
The workshop is based on the method “Freeing the Natural Voice” by Kristin Linklater and practices derived from the work of theater ensembles operating within the ethos of performer training (understanding the term “performer” as “a person who acts”, echoing Jerzy Grotowski). This makes the workshop a very beneficial direction also for professional actors, singers, and people involved in the broadly understood work on stage, interested in their further professional development."
“SIGH-SING” is a rich and deep encounter with the human voice, during which we learn how to combine methodological experiences with the practical liberation of the voice in song, text, and improvisation.
Joanna Kurzyńska (Designated Linklater Teacher) will guide participants and their voices toward better understanding, awareness, and resonance. Drawing from the work of her masters, including Kristin Linklater, the facilitator aims to grant the voice the freedom and space it deserves, allowing for genuine expression.
The work will encompass both the individual lines of each participant and group experience. Each person will have the chance to open their own path in working with the voice, while as a group, we will be able to experience the strength of support that comes from sharing our voices and meeting in it through polyphonic song, conversation, breath, movement, and silence.
“And then, all of a sudden, that song begins to sing us.
That ancient song sings me;
I don’t know anymore if I am finding that song or if I am that song”
“From the Theatre Company to Art as Vehicle” Jerzy Grotowski

Elements of the work:
- Physical training stimulating communication between body - head - voice and establishing the necessary “presence” for the group, meaning full participation in the Here and Now.
- Vocal warm-ups incorporating elements of the “Freeing the Natural Voice” method by Kristin Linklater; these warm-ups serve not only to warm up the body and voice in preparation for work but primarily to open up to a true, deeper connection with oneself (through breath, sighing, touching sound).
- Connecting Linklater's main idea with sung voice – *How can a sigh turn into a song?*
- Resonators – working with basic resonators and their significance in using the voice (based on the “ladder of resonators” by Kristin Linklater).
- “Harmony of collective singing” – a shared meeting in the richness of traditional multi-voiced songs.
- Free vocal improvisation as a way to remove blockages
The work will consist of physical exercises, and participants will engage with each other in both vocal and physical interaction.
